BBC town hall forum Sept. 5 at Missouri S&T

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri University of Science and Technology has been selected as the site for an upcoming town hall forum on the U.S. presidential election, hosted by the British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) and broadcast on the BBC World Service radio program Newshour.

The forum will be held from 3:30-5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, in Leach Theatre of Missouri S&T’s Castleman Hall, 10th and Main streets. The actual broadcast will begin at 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

BBC Newshour presenter Robin Lustig will serve as host for the forum, which will include a panel made up of two U.S. representatives from Missouri, a Missouri S&T political science professor and a Missouri journalist.

Panelists are:

* U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, a Republican, who represents Missouri’s Second Congressional District, which includes parts of St. Charles and St. Louis counties and all of Lincoln County. Akin has represented the Second District since 2001.

* U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan, a Democrat, who represents Missouri’s Third Congressional District, which includes parts of St. Louis and St. Louis County, and all of Jefferson and Ste. Genevieve counties. Carnahan is a native of Rolla and the son of former Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan and former Missouri Sen. Jean Carnahan. Carnahan has represented the Third District since 2005.

* Dr. Michael Meagher, associate professor of political science at Missouri S&T.

* Bonnie Bell, a journalist with Radio Springfield
